Protecting Yourself Against Uninsured Motorists

Protecting Yourself Against Uninsured Motorists

Earlier this year, we asked for your insurance related questions on our Facebook Page. It’s time that we answer another of the questions that we received, and this one’s all about auto insurance! Heidi asked us the following question:

“If auto insurance is mandatory, why are there many uninsured motorists driving? Why isn’t this enforced?”

While we don’t understand why a driver would choose to endanger others by driving without sufficient insurance, we can explain the danger of uninsured motorists, and how you can protect against them with the help of a car insurance policy from our agency.

What is an Uninsured Motorist?

As you could probably guess, an uninsured motorist is someone who drives a vehicle without auto insurance coverage. What may surprise you is that The Insurance Research Council (IRC) estimates that 1 out of every 7 drivers in the US is currently uninsured. This is a huge concern because any auto accident caused by an uninsured driver can mean significant costs that aren’t covered by liability insurance policies.

To combat the fact that nearly 15% of drivers are uninsured, most states now require auto insurance policies to include uninsured motorist coverage. Massachusetts is one of these states.

Massachusetts Auto Insurance Requirements

In the state of Massachusetts, there is a minimum amount of insurance that must be held by each driver. When you get a Massachusetts auto insurance quote, this is the absolute minimum amount of coverage that you must purchase according to state laws:

  • Bodily Injury to Others: $20,000 per person; $40,000 per accident
  • Personal Injury Protection: $8,000 per person, per accident
  • Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto: $20,000 per person; $40,000 per accident
  • Damage to Someone Else’s Property: $5,000 per accident

As you can see, anyone with auto insurance in the state of Massachusetts has at least $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident worth of coverage against uninsured motorists. This means that you don’t need to fear getting into an accident with an uninsured motorist – your car insurance policy has built in protection against this situation. This protection typically includes coverage for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages. Ask your Massachusetts insurance agent if you have coverage against uninsured motorists for your property, including your home and automobile.

If you want to discuss the uninsured motorist coverage in your Massachusetts auto insurance policy, all you have to do is call 617-298-0655 and speak to a Vargas and Vargas Insurance agent. We can let you know how much coverage you have for accidents involving uninsured motorists, and let you know if you should increase your coverage. And if you have any questions about any of your insurance policies, feel free to call our agency and ask one of our expert Massachusetts insurance agents.

Stay tuned to the Vargas and Vargas Insurance Blog for more answers to the questions that you submitted, and much more!

What to Do If You Have an Accident at Work

What to Do If You Have An Accident At Work

If there’s one rule in life, it’s that accidents happen, and they can happen anywhere. Whether you work a physically demanding job, or sit in a cubicle from 9-5, there is always a possibility that you could have an accident at your workplace. If an accident occurs, there are a few major steps that you should take in order to protect yourself:

Fill Out an Accident Report

No matter how trivial an accident may seem, you should always fill out an accident report, even if you don’t think you are injured. Most workers compensation insurance policies have a very short window after the accident in which an accident report must be filed, so filing an accident report regardless of the severity of the accident will protect you in case any injuries manifest in a few days as a result of the accident.

Reporting the accident to your workplace will also allow the business to take measures to ensure that an accident like yours does not happen again to another employee, so fill out an accident report for the safety of your coworkers.

See a Doctor

Again, regardless of the severity of your accident, you should take the initiative to see a medical professional. If your injury is serious, you need to go to the emergency room for treatment. Otherwise, ask the appropriate party at your workplace if there is a specific doctor you need to see or if you can go to a doctor of your choosing. Have the doctor that you see perform a full evaluation, and ask what you should look out for, and what physical symptoms would indicate an injury.

Report all Injuries ASAP

There is always a chance that an injury won’t manifest immediately when you have an accident. Because of this, you need to be vigilant in paying attention to your body for several days after an accident. If you do discover an injury after the fact, report it to your employer immediately, and speak to a medical professional to get treatment.

Inquire About Workers Comp Coverage

Whether you report an injury immediately after an accident or after some time has passed, your employer should file a workers compensation insurance claim with their insurance provider on your behalf. Ask the person at your workplace to keep you updated on the status of your claim, and stay on top of the claims process.

If you run into any issues with your claim or anywhere in the process, you may want to contact a lawyer that is experienced with workers compensation claims. They will be able to fill you in on what you can expect from the claim, and make sure that you receive the appropriate benefits.

Businesses that are looking for business insurance or workers compensation coverage should contact Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency at 617-298-0655. We are a premier provider of Massachusetts business insurance policies, and can get a business great coverage at a great price.

How to Get the Best Renters Insurance

How To Get the Best Renters Insurance

If you rent the place that you live, then you need to make sure that you have excellent coverage for all of your belongings, as well as liability protection in case of an accident. You can do this by ensuring that you have the best renters insurance possible for your condo, apartment, or other rental property.

Thankfully, here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency we have Massachusetts renter’s insurance agents at the ready that can help you do the two things that you need to do for the best Massachusetts renters insurance – get great coverage at a great price! See the breakdown below to find out exactly what you can expect with a renters insurance quote from Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency:

Get Great Coverage…

A renters insurance policy is unique – it is similar to a home insurance policy, but doesn’t provide coverage for the dwelling itself (that is your landlord’s responsibility, so make sure that they have rental property insurance). Renters insurance has two major parts – coverage for your possessions in the event of a loss like a fire, and liability coverage in case someone is injured while in your residence.

If anything were to happen to your belongings or a visitor, your renters insurance will help to ensure that you’re not financially responsible for replacing your items or paying legal or medical bills. This peace of mind is priceless, so make sure that your renters insurance has enough coverage for any potentially harmful situation.

…At a Low Price!

It’s important to have comprehensive renters insurance coverage, but no one wants to pay too much for it! Here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency, we work hard so that our clients can get great coverage at a low price. We know several discounts for which you may be eligible, and we will do everything in our power to get as many discounts as possible for you.

Some of the discounts that we offer (depending on the insurance provider that you choose) are: claim free discounts, paperless discounts, auto-pay and pay-in-full discounts, protective device and safety discounts, and much more.

Shop Independent Insurance Agencies

One thing that you can do to ensure that you get the best renters insurance possible is to get your insurance through an independent insurance agency like Vargas and Vargas Insurance. Talk to one of our agents and we will get several insurance quotes for you from many insurance providers – this way you can consider several policies side-by-side in order to determine which policy option is the best for you – for renters insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, and much more.

So, does your current renters insurance policy meet all of your needs? If you want a renters insurance quote or a review of your current renters insurance policy, just call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency at 617-298-0655. We can help you ensure that you have the best renters insurance possible! Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm.

How to Survive 4 Common Emergency Situations

How to Survive Common Emergency Situations

Odds say that you will face at least one of these emergency situations in your life. If you take the time to prepare yourself now, it will make dealing with the emergency much easier – after all, Benjamin Franklin was right when he said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Here are four common emergencies that many people have to deal with every day, and an explanation of what you can do now to prepare yourself and your family in case they affect you in the future:

A Flat Tire or Blowout

Cars are complex machines, meaning that there are a lot of different parts in your vehicle that could potentially break and cause an issue. One of the most common issues that drivers face on the road is a flat tire (because tires are in constant contact with the road, they are more vulnerable to issues than other parts of the car).

To prevent tire problems, make sure that you check your tire pressure and rotate your tires regularly, and replace tires that begin to look worn. If you hear a tire pop or suddenly lose control while driving, get a firm grip on the steering wheel and apply the brakes slowly. Pull over to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights so that you can change your tire or call someone for assistance.

A Severe Storm

As we’ve already mentioned here on the blog, it’s hurricane season in the Atlantic from June 1 until November 30. Don’t wait until a hurricane is heading to New England to prepare your emergency kit! It should include everything that you need for 3 days, including food, water, prescription medications, space blankets, first aid supplies, flashlights, and more. Visit ready.gov for a full list of what to include in your family’s emergency kit.

A House Fire

Every year, there are hundreds of thousands of house fires in the US. Typically, these are caused by cooking equipment, smoking, or faulty heating equipment. Reduce your risk of a house fire by following common cooking and grilling safety tips, being careful to ensure that cigarettes and cigars are fully extinguished, and following the safety tips and maintenance schedule for all of your home’s heating devices.

If there is a fire in your home, you want to make sure that the proper authorities are notified as soon as possible. Do this by checking your home’s smoke alarms regularly. Also make sure that there is a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen, and that all family members know where it is located and how to use it.

A Case of Frostbite

It may not seem like a threat right now, but Boston winters can get cold, so you should be prepared to deal with a case of frostbite. In fact, you can get frost bite when the wind chill is below -19°F, which happens several times a year here in New England.

The signs of frostbite include a loss of feeling and a lack of color in the affected area, typically the fingers, toes, earlobes, and tip of the nose. If you suspect that you or someone else has frostbite, seek shelter immediately and get medical attention. Do not use friction to warm up the affected area, as it could cause permanent damage to the skin.

Now that you’re ready to deal with these four emergency situations, please use the “Share” buttons below to help your friends and family prepare themselves as well. Also “Like” the Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency Facebook page for updates about our agency, links to informative blog posts and articles, and insurance tips!

Influences on Boston Car Insurance Quotes

Boston car insurance quotes

When you call Vargas and Vargas Insurance for a car insurance quote, it may seem like our agents come up with a number out of thin air. The rate that they quote isn’t arbitrary, though – Boston car insurance quotes are based on a variety of factors. Some of these factors are explained below:

Your Features

The attributes of the driver are one of the factors that determines how much an insurance policy will cost. As your Boston insurance agent asks you questions to determine your car insurance quote, they will likely ask for your information including your gender and date of birth. Generally, women are safer drivers than men (and therefore pay less for their auto insurance). As you get older, your auto insurance rates will probably decrease – teenagers pay significantly more than more experienced drivers.

In some cases, insurance providers will also check your credit score when determining your car insurance rate. This is because there is often a correlation between a person’s credit score and their likelihood to file an insurance claim in the future.

Your address and the amount of time that you spend in the car will also have an effect on your insurance cost. Living in a safe area with low crime is a plus to insurance providers, as is having a short commute to work or a low average weekly mileage.

Your Car

The type of car that you drive has a significant impact on your car insurance costs for many reasons. First, the safety devices and features in your car may help you to avoid getting into an accident in the first place, or may reduce the severity of any accidents that do happen. Cars with significant safety features may qualify for significant discounts, while cars without added protection may have higher rates. Cars with special parts are often more expensive to repair, and often cost more to insure than cars with parts that are less expensive and easy to find.

Your Driving Record

It should come as no surprise that your driving record impacts your insurance costs. If you have had accidents or other driving violations in the past, insurance providers will often see you as an increased risk to insure, and will charge you more to make up for their increased potential loss. The longer you are able to go without a mark on your record, the less your insurance bill is likely to be.

Your Coverage

As the age-old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.” This is true when it comes to auto insurance policies. Getting a cheap policy often means leaving off important coverage. You need to have an experienced Boston insurance agent find you a car insurance quote that gets you the most bang for your buck – great coverage at a great price.

Now that you know more about how car insurance quotes are determined, call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency for a free quote of your own! One quick call to 617-298-0655 will put you in touch with one of our friendly and knowledgeable Boston auto insurance agents, and they will help you get a great insurance policy at a price that’s right for you.

The Essentials of a Basic Toolkit

Basic Toolkit

There are some essentials that every person needs. One of these is a basic toolkit. It doesn’t matter if you’re a DIY expert, or you just want to be able to hang the occasional picture, a toolkit is something that you will need.  If you need to assemble a basic toolkit, make sure that you have the following essential items, and consider the list of ‘other good items’ as well.

The Essentials

A Screwdriver Set – Screwdrivers are the ultimate universal tool. They can obviously install and remove screws, but they can also act as levers in a pinch for opening paint cans and battery compartments. Make sure that you get a set of various sizes with both flat and Phillips heads.

A Solid Hammer – If you plan on hanging pictures or putting up other decorations, a hammer is a ‘must have’ addition to your toolbox. You don’t necessarily need something that’s professional grade – just get a good solid hammer with a claw on the back for nail removal.

A Set of Pliers – Two pairs of pliers will be all that the basic homeowner or renter will need. One set should be a 10 inch groove-joint plier, and the other should be an 8 inch needle-nose plier.

A Tape Measure – Another building block of the basic toolkit is a standard measuring tape. Get one that it at least 25 feet long, and about one inch wide (so that it won’t constantly collapse when measuring longer distances).

A Level – Make sure that all of your projects are even with a level. One with three built-in bubble levels will make sure that you have all that you need. A longer level can double as a straightedge, or opt for a laser level for a more hands-free approach. In a pinch, most smartphones can install an app that will make it act as a level.

Other Good Items

A Flashlight – You probably already have a flashlight in your emergency kit, but it doesn’t hurt to have more than one for your dimly lit projects. Make sure that you stock extra batteries for it as well.

Glue and Tape – If you need two things to remain attached and a nail or screw won’t do the job, you will probably need some super glue or duct tape. Keep these in your toolbox for easy access in a pinch.

Lubricant – For all of the squeaky hinges in your life, make sure that you have some WD-40 (or another comparable item) on hand at all times.

Safety Equipment – For the more complicated and dangerous DIY jobs around the house, make sure that you have the proper safety gear. This typically includes goggles, ear protection, heavy duty gloves and an apron. These items will make sure that you are less likely to get hurt while you complete projects around your home.

To round out your new toolbox, make sure that you add a renters or home insurance policy from the Massachusetts insurance experts here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency. One quick call to 617-298-0655 and you can get a free, no-obligation quote for financial protection.

Improve Your Day in Ten Minutes or Less

Improve Your Day in 10 Minutes or Less

In today’s world, everyone is busy. Would you be able to take 10 minutes out of your busy schedule in order to improve your day? That’s less than 1% of your day! Next time you’ve got a free moment (whether it’s first thing in the morning, between tasks at work, or before you go to bed) try one of the following activities and find something that works for you and your routine:

Meditate – One of the easiest ways that you can improve your day is to take a handful of minutes to just slow down and breathe. Find a quiet place within yourself, and let your thoughts flow freely. For some help, try calm.com for a timed guided meditation.

Do a Quick Workout – Whether you’re at home or at work, you always have time for a ten minute workout. Not only will they help you burn a few extra calories and stay fit, but they will also help boost your energy and improve your mood.

Get Some Fresh Air – If it’s a nice day out, spend some time outside. Take a friend or a canine companion on a walk (or go by yourself). Play catch outside with your kids. Regardless, you may notice your mood improve significantly due to the change of scenery and light activity.

Read Something – Obviously ten minutes isn’t enough time to get anywhere in a novel, but it’s the perfect opportunity to read a blog or news article (like this one!) during a break. Take the time to learn something new and take a break from focused activities.

Check in with a Loved One – It doesn’t take more than a few minutes to send an email or text message to a friend or family member. In just ten minutes, you can improve your relationship with someone that you love, and feel great about it too!

Clean Up Your Space – Cleaning and organizing your home or office may seem like a huge chore, but you may be surprised by how much of a difference you can make in just ten minutes a day. Having a tidy space will also improve your mood and could even increase your productivity.

Sort Your Thoughts – It’s important to unwind and organize your thoughts each day. Some do this through meditation, as mentioned earlier, but other people prefer methods like journaling in order to sort out their thoughts and feelings of that day’s events.

Release Stress – Take a few minutes each day and release the tension that’s been building in your body for the last 24 hours. To some, this may mean playing a video game. To other’s it’s a hot bubble bath. Find how you best relieve stress and give yourself ten uninterrupted minutes of that activity each day.

Want another way to improve your life in just a few minutes? Call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency for an insurance review. We can look at your home and auto insurance policies to determine if you have the right coverage at the right price. Talk to an experienced Boston insurance agent by calling 617-298-0655.

6 Reasons You’ll Need Life Insurance in Retirement

Reasons

Often, people think of life insurance as a way to protect loved ones in case of an unexpected death while they’re still working. It acts as a safeguard for income that your loved ones depend on. Because of this, life insurance has a reputation of being superfluous once you retire. In truth, there are several reasons why someone might need a Massachusetts life insurance policy in retirement – here are the top six:

To support your dependents.

Even in retirement, you may look like a bank to your children and grandchildren. If you are often the source of spending money for others, you may want to invest in a life insurance policy to ensure that their lifestyles aren’t forced to change upon your passing.

To care for special needs children.

If you have children or other dependents with special needs, a life insurance policy can help to ensure that they are taken care of when you’re no longer around. Ask an insurance expert if a special-needs trust is right for your situation – they can be useful in providing care in this unique situation.

To replace necessary income.

In some cases, people work even in retirement. If you work in retirement and depend on the income that you bring home, you may need a life insurance policy to ensure that your spouse doesn’t need to start working (or work more) to replace your income.

To replace a pension.

Pensions can be a great source of extra income, but sometimes they don’t have a survivorship option. Just as you would use a life insurance policy to replace income from a job, you may use a life insurance policy to replace pension income that you and your dependents have come to need.

To pay off residual debt.

Many retirees still have debts that need to be paid. If you retire with residual student loans, car loans, mortgages, credit card debts, or another type of debt, you should consider a life insurance policy to cover what you owe. While debts cannot be passed down to children, those that you owe can collect out of your estate until all debts are satisfied. A small insurance policy can ensure that this does not need to occur.

To leave a legacy.

If you would like to leave an inheritance to your dependents or a gift to your favorite charity upon your passing, you can do so with a life insurance policy. A small premium can help to ensure that there is money in the event of your death to give to children or grandchildren – in some cases, you can even specify that the money is to be used for educational expenses.

If you’re approaching retirement, consider these six reasons for keeping your life insurance policy. If you have any additional questions about your policy, speak to a Massachusetts life insurance expert here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency. One quick call to 617-298-0655 will put you in contact with someone who can answer your questions, get you a quote, and much more.

Are You Making These Laundry Mistakes?

Are You Making These Laundry Mistakes?

In your home, does it seem like there is an endless parade of dirty clothes, sheets, towels, and other laundry through your wash room? The first key to being more efficient is to make sure that your laundry room is properly organized. Get help with your household organization from our sister blog, First Time Home Buyer Tools – there you can find a blog all about how to best organize your laundry room for more efficient cleaning, even on a busy schedule.

To keep all of your things (and your washer and dryer) in great shape for years to come, make sure that you avoid these laundry mistakes:

Using the wrong detergent.

Depending on the type of washing machine that you have, you may need a specific type of detergent, like that made for High Efficiency (HE) washers. Also ensure that you’re using the right amount of detergent when you wash. It turns out that using more detergent than you need isn’t only a waste of money, you’re also probably causing your clothes to wear out more quickly – so always use the provided cup and pay attention to the fill lines, and don’t just ‘eyeball’ your detergent pours.

Overfilling the machine.

If you’re looking for efficiency in your laundry routine, overfilling your machine is actually anti-productive. It may seem like adding more to your loads means less laundry, but you’re actually reducing the cleaning power of your machine, and your clothes will suffer for it. When in doubt, make sure that your machine is loaded so that the items inside have plenty of room to move around and agitate so they can get clean.

Ignoring the care instructions.

Anything that you purchase will have instructions on how to best care for it – don’t think you can just get away with sorting by color and calling it a day. For example, many denim items need to be washed inside out, and only certain items made of wool can be machine washed and dried. You may also want to wash small items (like socks and intimates) in zippered mesh bags so that they don’t get tangled or lost in the wash.

Overlooking household cleaning solutions.

Not all laundry problems need expensive solutions. In some cases, you can overcome difficulties with items that you already have around your home. For example, vinegar is a natural deodorizer, and can be helpful in getting sweaty smells out of your gym clothes. Also, a paste of baking soda and water is as good of a stain remover as many of the products that you will find in your local supermarket.

Also remember to follow the proper safety procedures when doing laundry – clean your dryer’s lint trap after each load to avoid house fire, and have the proper home insurance just in case of an emergency. For a premier Massachusetts home insurance policy, call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency at 617-298-0655. After all, you never want to be stuck in a sticky situation without help, and Vargas and Vargas Insurance is a local insurance agency that’s always in your corner.

Commercial Insurance Terms and Definitions

Commercial Insurance Terms and Conditions

In today’s world, business owners have a lot on their plates. The last thing that you need to do as a Massachusetts business owner is to take the time to learn the language of business insurance – that’s why Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency is here! We want to help you insure your business without getting confused by insurance terms and jargon.

In an effort to aid local business owners in understanding their commercial insurance policies, we have compiled a list of common business insurance terms, along with their definitions.

Commercial Insurance – Financial protection for businesses. In the event of a covered loss, the business will be reimbursed for their loss according to their policy.

Commercial Property – The business’s property and physical belongings. Depending on the policy, this could include land, structures, and completed additions. Permanently installed fixtures and equipment are also typically considered part of the property. Furniture, equipment, and technology that is owned by the business but not permanently attached to the property are considered business personal property. In some cases, the personal property of others is also included as a part of the commercial insurance policy.

Covered Loss – Covered losses change from policy to policy, but come in two major categories: specified perils include a list of perils against which the policyholder is insured, and open perils cover all losses unless they are specifically listed as being excluded (this typically includes flood and earthquake, where a separate insurance policy must be purchased to ensure protection).

Actual Cash Value – In the event of a loss, a policy that pays actual cash value will often pay fair market value – a dollar amount that a reasonable seller would accept, and that a reasonable buyer would pay. Other ways that actual cash value are determined may vary, so ask your insurance agent for an explanation of the calculation before you purchase a policy.

Replacement Cost – The alternative to actual cash value is replacement cost. If your commercial insurance policy offers replacement cost for your business’s property, you will be reimbursed according to the amount of money it would cost to replace the lost or damages property with new property if like kind or quality in your local market.

Renewal – When your commercial insurance policy expires, you will likely be given the opportunity to continue that policy with the same insurance provider. Depending on your insurance provider, renewing your policy may qualify you for a discount on your insurance premium.

Deductible – When you report a loss, you will be reimbursed for your loss after you cover the deductible – the portion of the loss that the insured is responsible for paying before insurance benefits are payable. Lowering your deductible will often raise your insurance premium, and vice versa.

Is there a Massachusetts commercial insurance term that you don’t understand, and that isn’t listed here? If so, ask one of the Vargas and Vargas business insurance experts about the term by calling 617-298-0655. We are here to help you understand your insurance coverage, and we are always happy to answer any and all questions that you may have. Don’t wait – call us today!

How To Make Better Beverage Choices

Staying hydrated is so important to our bodies – in fact, water makes up more than half of your body by weight! Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water in order to function. Your body also uses water to maintain its temperature, lubricate your joints, and much more.

You need to make sure that you replace all of the water that your body loses naturally. Otherwise, you could become dehydrated, which can lead to fatigue, headache, confusion, and dizziness.

Most health care professionals say that everyone should drink between six and eight 8 ounce glasses of fluid each day. The truth is, though, that some fluids are better for you than others. Continue reading to find out if your hydration habits are correct, or if you could use a little help in making better beverage choices.

When you’re thirsty, have water

If you were to take one thing away from this post, let it be this: your beverage intake should consist of mostly water. It has zero calories, zero fat, zero sugar – water is all zeroes! It is fluid in its purest form, and will allow your body to hydrate while maintaining a healthy weight. If you’re feeling thirsty, don’t reach for a soda – instead, grab a glass of water to satisfy your thirst. It is especially important to drink plenty of water if you are active, if the weather outside is warm, or if you are an older adult.

Manage your beverage calories

It is almost too easy to intake several hundred calories each day in your beverages. Instead of reaching for soda or juice, drink water or unsweetened tea. This will lower your overall daily calorie intake (or free up a few calories so that you can have dessert). There are also lots of flavored water options available at retailers and grocery stores. If you want some flavor or carbonation in your beverages, try these instead of the typical calorie-laden beverages.

Have easy to access healthy drinks

It’s so easy to reach into a fridge or cooler to grab a soda – do your part to encourage your family to drink healthy beverages by making them the easiest to see and grab in your home. Pack water in lunch boxes and backpacks when someone leaves the house so that they have a healthy and convenient beverage at all times while they’re on-the-go.

Know how to indulge

Just like you sometimes indulge in a sweet treat, you may want to indulge in a beverage once in a while. Make sure that sugary beverages are just that – an occasional treat. Before you indulge, read the drink’s nutrition labels and make a mental note of how many servings and calories you are about to consume, and do so in moderation.

If you use this tips, you can help to ensure that your body stays hydrated and healthy – without all of the extra calories and sugar that are present in many popular beverages. And remember, you friends at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency are here to help you stay healthy too! Just call 617-298-0655 to get a quote on Massachusetts health insurance today!

Best Places in Massachusetts for Cheap Car Insurance

You already probably know that your place of residence has a huge effect on your home insurance cost. Did you know that it also affects what you pay for car insurance? It turns out that the average car insurance premium varies per city, according to Boston.com. Even in the state of Massachusetts, car insurance rates can vary by as much as $1,000 per year based on where you live.

There are a few reasons why your location affects your insurance premium. Most notably, people who live in areas that have a high population and traffic density are more likely to get into an accident. Insurance providers also consider the car theft rates when determining insurance premiums. For example, the state average of car thefts per 1,000 residents is 1.44. In Chelsea (the area in Massachusetts with the highest car insurance premiums) the rate is 4.98 thefts per 1,000 residents.

  8. Everett: $1,448.38
  9. Malden: $1,448.13
  10. Medford: $1,448.13

How to Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal

How To Improve Your Home's Curb AppealDoes your home need a dash of glamour? Whether you’re getting ready to sell your home, or you’re just looking to spruce up the outside of your abode, we’ve got some tips that will help you get your home looking fantastic in no time flat. Improve just a few of these areas, and you’ll notice a difference – heed all of these suggestions and your home may look so great that you don’t recognize it when you’re done!

The Front Door

One of the easiest and most impactful changes that you can make to your home in no time flat is to spruce up your front door. Make sure it is clean and fresh. Give it a new coat of paint if the New England weather is starting to take its toll, or simply add a classy door knocker or seasonal wreath to add a special touch to the focal point of your entry area.

The Entry Area

While you’re working on the front door, add some symmetry to the rest of your entry area. A pair of statues or topiaries can make this area seem fresh and clean. Also make sure to keep your front porch or stoop swept of debris. Adding some new light fixtures will take some extra effort, but can greatly increase your home’s curb appeal.

The Mailbox

When driving up to your home, the first thing that people often notice is the mailbox. Whether your current box needs a fresh coat of paint, or you want to replace your current box with something more sophisticated, a little bit of “TLC” will help freshen things up. Just remember that your mailbox should have the same style as your home – a lovely home that is hundreds of years old would need a classic mailbox (something modern would probably look severely out of place).

The Lawn and Walkways

Another great way to improve your home’s curb appeal is to freshen up your lawn and walkways. Make sure that grass is fresh and no dead spots are visible. Walkways should be clear of debris, level, and crack-free. Add some small solar powered lights along sidewalks and driveways for an instant boost.

Flowers and Greenery

Nothing increases the attractiveness of a home quite like greenery. If you have a green thumb, do some gardening this summer and add some color to your front yard. If, on the other hand, you need some help when it comes to choosing plants and keeping them healthy, call on our friends at Cedar Grove Gardens for advice about anything from houseplants to growing a garden. Even just a window box or potted plant will take your home’s curb appeal to the next level.

If you have a few extra minutes to spend on your home when you’re done improving its curb appeal, why not improve your Massachusetts home insurance policy? With one quick call to the experts here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency, you can get a free review of your current policy, or a quote for something new.

Have a Safe and Fun Fourth of July

Safe and Fun Fourth of JulyOn the fourth day of July each year, we celebrate Independence Day – the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This year, we will celebrate America’s 239th birthday, and we will do so in style! No matter what your plans are for this year’s Independence Day celebrations, make sure that you put safety first! Here are a few safety tips for the most popular Fourth of July activities:

Sun and Water Safety

Enjoy the warm weather without exposing yourself to dangerous rays – limit your sun exposure during peak hours (between 10 am and 4 pm) and make sure that you are wearing sun protection, including hats, sleeved shirts, and sunscreen. Also brush up on the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Make sure that you and your party also have plenty of fluids while spending time out in the heat.

If you’re thinking of hitting the pool over the holiday weekend (or any time this summer) make sure that you follow Vargas and Vargas Insurance’s Swimming Safety Tips for Summer, including supervising children at all times, enrolling in swimming or water safety classes, having the right tools when around water, and more.

Grilling Safety

Are you planning to break out the grill for an Independence Day BBQ? Whether you’re just making lunch for your family or hosting a party, make sure that you follow these basic safety tips:

  • Supervise grill when hot
  • Never grill indoors or near flammable objects
  • Ensure that pets and children stay away from the grill
  • Use utensils with long handles for grilling
  • When in doubt, follow your grill’s manufacturer’s instructions

When the cooking is done, you should also ensure that your food doesn’t sit out at room temperature for more than two hours. At that time, it could begin to go bad and could cause distress to those that consume it. Before your two hours is up, either refrigerate your leftovers or throw away anything that’s not been eaten.

Fireworks Safety

According to MGL Chapter 148, S. 39, “It is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. The law prohibits any article designed to produce a visible or audible effect.” The penalty for possession or use of a firework is confiscation of the fireworks and a fine of $10 to $100.

If you want to watch a traditional fireworks display for the Fourth, check out the list of fireworks shows in the area from Mass.gov. If you attend one of these shows, make sure that you stay in the designated viewing area, a safe distance from the fireworks themselves.

Events in Boston

If you’re looking for plans for the Fourth this year, you’re in luck! There are tons of events going on in Boston, like the 2015 Boston Harborfest, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, and more!

From all of us here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency, we hope that you have a fun and safe Fourth of July weekend. Ten Reasons to Support Local Businesses

Here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency, we love to support local businesses. After all, local businesses are what make our neighborhoods unique! It may be convenient to go to a chain store where you can get everything that you need in one stop, but next time you go out shopping, consider shopping at local businesses.

Support Local Businesses

Here are ten good reasons why you should make your next trip out a small business shopping experience from our friends at Sustainable Connections:

  1. Strengthen your local community – When you patronize local business, more of your money stays in the community, being used to support other small businesses rather than going to national chains and lining the pockets of big-wig CEOs.
  2. Support community nonprofits – Local businesses are approximately 250% more likely than larger businesses to give to non-profit organizations. Shopping at small businesses helps your community in so many ways!
  3. Keep the community unique – Every city has the same national chains. It’s the locally owned businesses that distinguish our community from all the others.
  4. Decrease environmental harm – Local businesses typically buy local – this means less sprawl, less congestion, less habitat loss, and less pollution than when you purchase from a large chain.
  5. Create more local jobs – Small businesses are the largest employer nationally when considered as a whole. Spending your money locally ensures more jobs stay in our neighborhoods.
  6. Get better service – Local businesses have a reputation for hiring the best employees – they don’t settle for any warm body.
  7. Invest in the community’s future – Small businesses are an integral part of any community, and they tend to be invested in the community’s future. It’s why we attend and sponsor so many community events here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency!
  8. Use your taxes wisely – Because small businesses are, well… smaller… they use less infrastructure than their national counterparts. This means that your tax dollars will go further if you support small businesses.
  9. Ensure innovation and competition – Local businesses sell products based on the needs of the community, not as the nation (or world). This means that the products sold at small businesses will be better tailored to meet your needs as a consumer.
  10. Encourage community prosperity – Did you know that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to settle in communities that back small businesses.

If you’re interested in supporting businesses in your area, consider joining a Cash Mob. A Cash Mob is an organized event designed to increase revenue at pre-chosen local businesses, like shops, restaurants, and more. Visit the Vargas and Vargas Insurance website’s Cash Mob page for more information, and to find links to the Dorchester and Stoughton Cash Mob Facebook Pages.

Continue to support local Massachusetts businesses by purchasing your insurance through Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency. We provide local consumers with top of the line home, auto, life, business insurance, and much more. Simply call 617-298-0655 and one of our agents will get to know you and assess your unique insurance needs. Don’t wait any longer – call now!

Avoid These Unexpected Wedding Expenses

Avoid These Unexpected Wedding Expenses

It’s wedding season once again. If you’re planning to walk down the aisle in the near future, you’re probably already aware that the average cost of a wedding is over $25,000. Even frugal weddings cost thousands of dollars nowadays, so if you want to have all of the fun and romance without the inflated bill, be aware of these costs that you may not expect, and be prepared to deal with them accordingly.

The Venue

If you’re planning to rent out a location for your wedding, be prepared to pay for it, especially in peak season. If you’re looking to save some money, plan your wedding in an off-peak month, or on a weeknight when the venue won’t have as much demand. People planning smaller weddings can also consider getting married at home, or at a local park – just be prepared to pay for chair and table rentals.

The Flowers

Between the bride’s bouquet, bridesmaids’ bouquets, and boutonnieres, you’re probably racking up quite a floral tab. And if you want to add corsages and boutonnieres for the moms and dads? What about floral centerpieces at the reception? To save some money on flowers, cut down on how many you will need. Consider building the bouquets and boutonnieres yourself (it isn’t all that difficult) with flowers from a local florist.

The Photographs

Your wedding photographs are pictures that you will look back on for a lifetime, so you want to make sure that they’re good. If you have a friend or relative that has a nice camera, consider paying them to take your portraits. There are also services like WedPics that will allow guest to upload their pictures of the wedding.

The Bar

It’s an endless debate – do you offer an open bar at your wedding, or make your guest pay for their drinks? If you want to offer drinks without spending too much, consider only supplying beer and wine, or only offering an open bar for a few hours before switching to a cash bar.

The Catering

Catering is often second on the list of highest wedding costs. Avoid breaking the bank by cutting back on your catering costs – serve three courses instead of five, or offer only fish and chicken instead of paying for costlier beef dinners. You could also save by opting to have your wedding earlier in the day and serving lunch instead.

The Miscellaneous Costs

The truly unexpected costs are the ones that will end up derailing your wedding budget. Be prepared beforehand, though, and you won’t be surprised. Remember that it’s customary to tip venue staff and vendors 10% – 20%, account for dress alterations, and remember to ask if your ceremony or reception venue charges parking fees.

If you want to protect all of the money that you’re planning to spend on your wedding, call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency at 617-298-0655 and ask about a wedding or special event insurance policy. The insurance experts here at Vargas and Vargas Insurance want to help protect you from your engagement to your special day and beyond!

Five Things You Should Know About Your Home Insurance

Things You Should Know About Your Home Insurance

You know that you need home insurance, but how much do you know about your policy? Do you know what your policy does (and doesn’t) cover? Do you know why you should keep your home up to date on maintenance, or what you can do to lower your premium? Find the answers to these questions and more below, and make sure to call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency with your home insurance questions.

What your policy covers.

Every policy is different, but the basic coverage types in a Massachusetts home insurance policy are the same. Your policy will probably cover your property and your possessions in the event of theft, vandalism, fire, and certain storms. It will also probably afford you some liability protection and shelter costs in the event that you are forced to temporarily reside elsewhere.

What your policy doesn’t cover.

On the other hand, you should know what’s not covered under your home insurance policy. If you want coverage for events like earthquakes or floods, you will need supplemental insurance policies. Similarly, if you have valuable items like jewelry, art, or antiques, talk to a Massachusetts insurance expert about adding these items to your home insurance policy with a floater or valuable items policy.

Why good maintenance is important.

As a smart consumer, you’ve probably realized that your insurance provider would rather have issues prevented before they become claims. Catching small problems before they escalate will mean savings for both you and your insurance provider, so make sure to stick to your home’s maintenance calendar, and have all major systems inspected by a professional annually. These two actions will help you catch small issues.

Also make sure to keep an eye on your meters – if, for instance, your water bill starts to skyrocket for no apparent reason, you could have a leak on your hand, which you should have inspected right away.

What you can do to reduce your premium.

Just as it’s important to keep up with your home’s maintenance, you should take other preventative actions in your home. Some of these actions may even get you a discount on your home insurance premium! Depending on your insurance provider, these preventative discounts could apply to homes with:

  • Fire alarm and/or smoke detector
  • Burglar alarms and/or security systems
  • Deadbolt locks for all outer doors
  • A pool cover or child-safe pool fence

To find out if you are eligible for any of these home insurance discounts, contact your Massachusetts insurance agent today.

Why you should shop around.

You shop around when you’re looking for a new home, and you need to do the same with your home insurance policy. Shopping around helps ensure that you get the right coverage for your unique needs, and ensures that the price that you pay fits your budget.

If you need help shopping around for a Massachusetts home insurance quote, just call Vargas and Vargas Insurance Agency at 617-298-0655. We can get quotes from several insurance providers and will help you select the one that’s right for you and your loved ones.

Do These Things Before Leaving for a Vacation

Summer vacation is finally here – are you planning a family trip? Many families will be taking advantage of school breaks and beautiful weather to go somewhere and make memories.

Do These Things Before Leaving for a Vacation

Whether you’re staying close to home with a trip to Cape Cod or the Berkshires, or leaving for a cross country or international trip, make sure that you make a detailed checklist of the things that you need to do before you leave. Every family’s checklist will be different, but here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Check to make sure that all bills are taken care of for the entire time that you will be gone. Send in payments early or schedule automatic payments so that you won’t come back facing late fees.
  • Contact your local post office to put a hold on your mail, and stop newspaper deliveries. Nothing tells a burglar that you’re away quite like an overflowing mailbox or pile of old papers.
  • Clean out your wallet or purse of all unnecessary items. This includes credit cards and rewards cards that you won’t need. While you’re at it, make sure to write down emergency contact information and keep it in a safe place. Also give a copy to a neighbor or family member.
  • Carry copies of important documents with you when you travel. This can mean passports for international trips, or credit cards for domestic and international travel.
  • Call your bank and credit card companies to let them know you will be travelling. They will often put a note on your account so that your card isn’t frozen for suspicious activity. Some institutions will even let you do this online.
  • Purchase travel snacks and entertainment. Nothing busts a vacation budget quite like needing to purchase food and entertainment while you travel. Instead, pack a travel bag full of healthy snacks and several entertainment options from home.
  • Before you leave your home, make sure that your electronics are fully charged, and that your chargers are packed in an easy-to-reach place. You may even want to invest in an extra battery or a portable charger for your devices.
  • Tidy your home. It doesn’t have to sparkle, but there’s something to be said for coming home to an organized place. Take out the trash and clean out the fridge before you leave, and pick up any noticeable clutter. Extra kudos if you’re able to clean the sheets and do some laundry!
  • Take a walk around your home and power off or unplug everything you can. Obviously things like your fridge need to keep running, but the more that you can unplug the less you will spend on phantom energy, and the lower your chances of a spontaneous electrical fire while you’re away.

Of course, as Massachusetts insurance experts, we always encourage our clients to make a quick call to our agency before leaving for a trip to ensure that your policies will protect you while you’re away. For a quick and free review of your home insurance, just call 617-298-0655. Also make sure that you get an auto insurance review if you’re taking a road trip or parking your car at the airport for an extended period of time.
